Measuring Information and Guidelines

Important Information

Why Can’t You Just Order Me My Regular Size?
In the many years that Arnella’s has welcomed brides and their bridal parties into her shop, measuring for the proper size has been the most difficult venture. Please understand that the dresses are not made to YOUR measurements. A size chart from each manufacturer is used as a guideline for your bust, waist, and hip measurements. On the average, bridal wear runs smaller than normal street wear. Normally, you will need to go up 1 or 2 sizes so the dress will zip. This doesn’t mean the dress will fit! Sizing is not an exact science and alterations by a seamstress will almost always be necessary for a proper fit. Most of the time dresses can be altered down a size or two at the most; however, gowns cannot always be let out as some manufacturers do not allow for any seam allowances.

You Are Ordering Me a Size What ????
The days of the hourglass figure are gone for most women– at least in the USA! However, most size charts still reflect those types of measurements. To compensate for the larger waist measurements of today, you may need to order a much larger size than hoped for to get the dress to zip. It will be very large through the bust, but hopefully, alterations can be done to make the dress fit properly. Please don’t fault the bridal consultant for your measurements! We do the best we can with the size charts – and figures – that we are given!

So… You Are Going to Lose Weight!
I would have to honestly say that 95% of the girls/women I measure indicate they will lose weight before the wedding. That’s wonderful and I will be happy to get whatever size you think you will be wearing at that time. However, if you do not lose the weight – which I have seen happen over and over – please do not expect us to magically make the smaller dress fit you. If you do lose weight and kept the original size, we will do the best we can to alter the dress down to fit you. But remember, 1 to 2 sizes is the most any dress can be altered down. Just be honest with your bridal consultant and with yourself about your weight loss. The final decision and responsibility on what size to order is ultimately yours. We can only make recommendations as to your measurements with the size chart of that particular manufacturer.

Remember – Size is Only a Number!
Always take into consideration – the size is just a number – a number cannot determine how you will look and feel in the dress. Whatever size you get – whatever dress you get - when fitted properly – can and will look beautiful on you as long as you believe your beauty comes from within and you do not rely on the dress to make you look beautiful.

Measuring Guidelines

If a bridal store consultant or a professional seamstress is not available to measure you for your gown, it can be done yourself. It is very important you dress in just a good fitting bra and your underwear. Please do not measure over thick clothing.

Bust: Take a measuring tape around your back at bust level and over the fullest part of your bust. Pull the tape measure snug, but not too tight or too loose. Please do not give your bra size for your measurement.

Waist: Your waist measurement should be around the smallest part of your waist – typically where your belly button is. Your waist is not your hip-hugger pants.

Hips: You have hip bones and you have your buttocks. Measure around the fullest part of your buttocks.

Extra Length
Extra length is available for most bridal and bridal party gowns. One manufacturer – Jordan Fashions - actually includes extra length which each gown at no additional cost.
Extra length is recommended for anyone over 5’8” and there is an additional charge.

Sizes 18 and Over
Please also be aware that anyone size 18 and over will pay additional fees. This is standard in the industry and it is only because additional material is required and manufacturers charge the bridal stores fees for these dresses, hence, the fees are passed on to the customer.
